Project Advocacy - Alameda Corridor Freight Line

The Alameda Corridor is one of the most successful freight rail corridors in the world.

Its 10-mile freight “trench” currently carries 50+ one-mile long trains per day from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. It was completed for $2.5 billion, on time and under budget, and opened in 2002.

However, in the early years, it was beset with difficulties, primarily from the lack of allocation of $14.5 million of funding to complete its federal Environmental Impact Statement. Bill Lyte organized the “Friends of the Alameda Corridor” as a grass roots group with the sole purpose of obtaining release of the $14.5 million from the local transit agency. The effort was successful, the money was released, and the project went on to completion.
