The LABTC has become one of the world’s most successful technology incubators. It is owned and operated by the County of Los Angeles Community Development Commission. It is located in Altadena, north of Pasadena and next to NASA JPL. Bill Lyte was asked to chair the startup of the BTC prior to its groundbreaking in 1998. Working with the County’s program manager, Robert Swayze, and then Executive Director, Susan Prado, he recruited a highly talented Advisory Committee to promote the BTC. In his four years as Chair, the BTC grew and survived through the tech recession of 2000. Subsequently, working with the new Executive Director Mark Lieberman, and subsequently Stan Tomsic, he helped to build L.A. County Technology Week, based at the BTC, and managed by Technology and Development Group, LLC, which he co-founded. The BTC currently has 30 technology firms in residence, as well as its own angel investor group, the Pasadena Angels. BTC firms have collectively raised more than $100 million and generated 500+ jobs. Visitors from around the world regularly visit the BTC to see its “entrepreneurial ecosystem”, and the Governments of Western Australia and New Zealand have established offices there. |
